20 oz, 20 mil or 20×20? Understanding the Difference
The number “20” can mean very different things in a vinyl tarp specification. It may refer to material weight, material thickness, a finished tarp size, or one dimension of the cover.
Before comparing products or quotations, it helps to identify what the number actually describes.
A 20 oz vinyl tarp is therefore not automatically a 20 mil tarp, a 20×20 tarp, or a tarp with a 20 ft dimension.
If a product specification contains several of these values, they describe different parts of the product. For example, 20 oz may define material weight, a mil value may define thickness, and 20 ft × 30 ft may define the finished dimensions.
Keeping these values distinct is particularly important when comparing supplier quotations or transferring an existing tarp SKU to a new production source.
What Does 20 oz Mean on a Vinyl Tarp?
A 20 oz vinyl tarp generally refers to a Vinyl/PVC tarp made from material weighing approximately 20 ounces per square yard.
When 20 oz is already part of an established product requirement, it provides the material-weight basis for the finished tarp. It does not by itself define thickness, finished dimensions, reinforcement, fastening hardware, or finished-product performance.
Two PVC-coated materials described as 20 oz can also differ in base-fabric construction, coating structure, thickness, flexibility, or other technical properties.
If an existing product requires a particular thickness, strength value, functional treatment, test method, or tolerance, that requirement can be included together with the 20 oz weight basis.

For an existing SKU, these details can be reproduced from the drawing or sample rather than inferred from the words “20 oz.”

An existing sample can contain product information that is not captured by the material-weight description alone.
For supplier transfer or repeat production, the reference can include the 20 oz weight basis, thickness where specified, finished dimensions, construction, attachment positions, color, surface appearance, printing, labels, and packaging.
Where the product also has a defined test method, tolerance, or inspection criterion, it can be included in the order requirements used for production and acceptance.
This gives the buyer and manufacturer a clearer reference than relying on the product name alone.
