How PVC Coated Polyester Tarpaulin Is Constructed

PVC coated tarpaulin is made by applying PVC directly to polyester fabric. The fabric provides strength and stability, while the coating adds protection and influences flexibility and welding.

PVC Coating

The PVC coating is typically applied as a liquid compound to form a waterproof surface and protect the polyester reinforcement. Its formulation and applied weight affect flexibility, abrasion resistance and welding performance. UV-resistant, flame-retardant and cold-resistant options can be selected for the intended use.

Knife-Coating Process

In knife coating, a blade controls the application of PVC compound before heat treatment forms the coating. Buyers specifying PVC knife coated tarpaulin should confirm the reinforcement, coating build, surface and required test results. The process name alone does not define the material’s strength or durability.

Optional Surface Finishes

Glossy, matte, embossed and selected protective finishes can be specified to suit your appearance and application requirements. We can also emboss your logo onto the PVC coated tarpaulin surface. If the material will be printed or welded, compatibility with the selected finish should be verified during sample approval.

Price Factors

PVC coated tarpaulin price mainly depends on the PVC coating formulation, polyester base fabric, coating weight, total GSM, functional requirements and order quantity. Compare quotations for equivalent material specifications and delivery terms, rather than judging cost by the manufacturing process alone. See our guide to PVC tarpaulin roll pricing for material cost factors and quotation comparisons.

Share your target market and required standard so we can confirm the relevant documents or testing arrangements. Available certificates and reports should be checked against their scope and the selected material. Final approval should also include the agreed specification and any required processing trials.

When to Choose PVC Coated Tarpaulin

PVC kinfe coated tarpaulin fabric is worth evaluating when a cover or panel will experience repeated tension, rubbing, folding or outdoor exposure. The useful question is which construction can withstand those conditions while remaining practical to cut, join and handle.

For a cover pulled across cargo, the priority may be abrasion and tear resistance. For a frequently rolled curtain, flexibility and seam behavior may matter more. Large tensioned panels also require attention to reinforcement direction and attachment design.

Coated and laminated materials differ in how the PVC is combined with the textile. Direct coating applies PVC compound to the reinforcement, while PVC laminated tarpaulin uses pre-formed PVC films bonded to the fabric. Neither process guarantees a better result for every product. Compare the proposed specifications and representative samples against your working conditions.

Specify the Reinforcement and Coating Together

A useful PVC coated tarpaulin specification defines both the textile and the coating. Increasing total weight without reviewing the reinforcement may add material without solving the intended strength requirement.

SpecificationWhat to Confirm
Polyester reinforcementYarn size, density, textile construction and required strength direction
PVC coatingFace and back configuration, formulation requirements and coating adhesion
Total weight and thicknessTarget values, agreed tolerances and measurement methods
Surface and colorGloss, texture, finish, color reference and printable face
Usable width and roll lengthCutting layout, seam planning and handling requirements

GSM includes the mass of the reinforcement and PVC coating. Two rolls at the same GSM can therefore have different textile constructions, coating amounts and formulations. Compare tensile, tear, flexibility and processing requirements alongside weight.

Specify the required usable width rather than relying only on nominal roll width. The cutting layout can affect material yield and the number of seams in the finished product.

Coating Quality and Performance Requirements

A surface can look acceptable while still requiring further verification for its intended use. Coating coverage, uniformity and adhesion should be considered alongside the mechanical properties of the reinforcement.

For frequently handled products, agree on the relevant abrasion, folding or flexibility requirements. For tensioned products, identify the load direction and evaluate the material together with the planned seams and fixing points.

UV resistance, flame retardancy, cold resistance, mildew resistance and anti-static performance can be specified according to the application. Provide the required standard or test conditions so the proposed formulation and supporting evidence can be reviewed.

The roll material and finished product also need separate consideration. A continuous PVC surface can provide a water barrier, but seams, needle holes, fittings and wear can affect the completed cover. Air-retaining products require additional validation of the material, welded joints and assembled design.

Approve Welding and Printing on the Selected Surface

The selected PVC coated polyester fabric should be tested with the process you intend to use in production. Tell us whether you use high-frequency welding, automatic hot-air equipment, a handheld hot-air tool, sewing or another joining method.

Weld quality depends on the material configuration, equipment, settings and seam design. A sample trial should reproduce the intended overlap and joining conditions, followed by the agreed seam evaluation. Results from one machine should not automatically be applied to another.

Printing requires similar checks. Confirm the printable face, surface finish, ink system and curing method. Evaluate adhesion and appearance on the selected material, including any effect on later welding or folding.

For critical products, approve a representative seam, printed panel or fabricated part alongside the flat material sample. For bags, protective panels and other industrial products, explore our PVC coated fabric for industrial converting.

Compare Quotes for Equivalent Coated Materials

A price per square meter is useful only when the quotations cover comparable materials and supply conditions. Ask suppliers to quote against the same reinforcement, coating configuration, weight or thickness, usable width, surface and functional requirements.

Also confirm roll length, quantity, packaging, testing costs and delivery terms. A lower material price may offer little saving if the usable width creates more cutting waste or the material requires additional processing trials and rework.

When sourcing coated PVC tarpaulin, use an existing sample or written specification as a shared starting point. Record which requirements are confirmed and which still need testing before comparing the final offers.

PVC Coated Tarpaulin FAQs

Yes. Knife coating is a method of applying PVC compound to the textile reinforcement. However, “PVC coated” alone does not specify the exact production route. Confirm the process when it is part of your purchasing requirements.

Yes. Different face and back colors or surface requirements can be reviewed. State which side will be exposed, printed or joined so the proposed configuration can be checked before sampling.

Yes. Surface treatments and textures can influence ink adhesion and joining behavior. Test the selected finish with your intended ink, equipment and processing conditions before approving bulk material.

We can evaluate an existing sample and review its reinforcement, weight, thickness, color, surface and required performance. A proposed match should be confirmed through sample approval and relevant testing.

This series focuses on roll material for further processing. If you need custom finished PVC coated tarpaulins, provide the dimensions, quantity, seam design, edge reinforcement and attachment requirements for a separate fabrication quotation.
